A Vintage for the Ages: Reflections on Oregon’s 2023 Harvest

Best wineries in Willamette Valley, Oregon, Lange Estate Winery

During the 2023 harvest, winemakers across Oregon faced a season unfolding differently for each, turning challenges into opportunities to do what they do best—make beautiful wine. Winemakers reporting a warm May in Oregon had Clive Pursehouse at Decanter surmising, “In a region known for producing wines of balance and complexity, a warm vintage may mean different things for winemakers when it comes to picking decisions.”

Here’s some of what our winemakers report with this vintage:

7 Outstanding Pinot Noirs to Buy Now Right Now

A selection of great bottles from the old world and the new.

“Grown in France since at least the 13th century, Pinot Noir is now cultivated around the globe, in every country where wine is made. Its name, which means “black pine,” is a nod to the tight, pinecone-like clusters that grow on the vine. This tight formation makes it susceptible to mold and bacteria, so Pinot Noir does best in colder regions and responds well to diligent farming.”

Local Glass Wine Bottles are a 'No Brainer' for Oregon Winery

“For U.S. wineries, sustainability isn’t just about how they till their land and make wine, it’s also in the packaging they use – and choosing domestically-made glass wine bottles fits perfectly into their brand story.

“We’re looking to always make sure we have the highest quality products – from growing the grapes all the way to our packaging,” said Jesse Lange, Winemaker and Winegrower at Lange Estate Winery & Vineyard in Dundee, Oregon. “We try to make world-class wines and it needs to be in a world-class packaging. The glass bottle is parcel to that.”

Local Glass, Global Impact: Improving Wines Carbon Footprint

Wineries Foster Localism

“Wineries are also looking for other ways to increase sustainability, such as buying locally to reduce carbon emissions since transportation accounts for 90% of greenhouse gas emissions[1]. This approach also contributes to the local economy, an essential factor in many wine regions.”

8 Harmonious Oregon Pinot Noirs for $40 or Less

“After wildfire smoke turned the 2020 vintage into a nightmare, many Willamette Valley winemakers fast-tracked their 2021 Pinot Noirs for release. The 2021s, in general, are vibrant and crisp with fresh fruit and acidity, as this week’s selection of new releases aptly demonstrates.”
