Savory, Sweet, & Intriguing
Inspired by National Popcorn Day on January 19th, we’re bringing to you a trifecta of fun popcorn pairings for our coveted Three Hills Cuvée Chardonnay.
Created by Chef Krysta Moseley and Lange Estate Marketing Assistant Caitlin Zitko, these elevated popcorn flavors will surely leave you ready for more. Paired with our 2020 Three Hills Cuvée Chardonnay, the quick recipes below are ideal for a day of watching movies at home or an evening of hosting loved ones.
1/4 cup popcorn kernels (we used Bob’s Red Mill Yellow Popcorn)
3 tablespoons oil (1 tablespoon for popping, 2 tablespoons for tossing)
1 teaspoon truffle salt (Chef Krysta recommends Sabatino Tartufi) or salt to personal preference
Tasting Notes – Decadent, Salty, and Savory. The 2020 Three Hills Cuvée Chardonnay and Truffle Toppings popcorn both enhance one another’s brightness. Eat a few pieces of popcorn before taking a sip of chardonnay for a creaminess reminiscent of soft (not overpowering) blue cheese.
1 tablespoon dried tarragon
1 teaspoon sugar or sugar to personal preference
3 tablespoons freeze-dried strawberry powder (Add freeze-dried strawberries to a food processor and blend until powdery.)
Tasting Notes – Vivacious, Cheerful, and Coconutty. The epitome of a mouthwatering pairing, the popcorn’s sharp strawberry notes are followed by delicious toasted coconut undertones. This strawberry powder shocks the palate for a split second before melting into the 2020 Three Hills Cuvée Chardonnay. Take this dessert-ready flavor to the next level by tossing in an optional fine shaving of white chocolate.
Oil from a jar of sun-dried tomatoes
1 tablespoon dried basil
1 teaspoon salt or salt to personal preference
Tasting Notes – Herbal, Fun, and Effortless. This option was even more delightful than we anticipated and was our surprising household favorite! The popcorn offers a slight brightness from the tomatoes with most focus being pulled towards the herbaceousness of the oil. The 2020 Three Hills Cuvée Chardonnay coaxes the tomatoes further into the spotlight for a perfectly balanced pairing.
Heat pan on medium-high heat.
Add 1 tablespoon oil and 1/4 cup kernels. Cover and wait until kernels are fully popped, shaking the pan occasionally.
Once fully popped, place popcorn in a large bowl and toss with your choice of toppings/additional oil.
Add salt to taste and enjoy!
Get adventurous by making all three flavors separately, then try them each to see which pairing is your favorite. All three flavors are captivating on their own and when eaten together (especially the Tomato Toppings + Truffle Toppings).
Not in the mood for stovetop popcorn? Grab your favorite bag of plain, microwave-ready popcorn and follow its heating instructions. Once your popcorn is fully popped, place popcorn in a large bowl and toss with your choice of toppings/additional oil.
