Volcanic Origins
TERROIR-DRIVEN WINES
The Lange’s three estate vineyards are located in the Northern Willamette Valley’s prestigious Dundee Hills Appellation. The AVA is known for its rust-red volcanic soils formed by Columbia River Basalts more than 14 million years ago. These rich clay-loam soils, predominantly Jory and Nekia, are deep and well-drained.
Our vineyard blocks are farmed individually and possess natural variances in climate, elevation, and aspect. By keeping our yields low, and harvesting at peak ripeness, we use a minimalist approach in the cellar, and our wines speak for themselves. We respect our land and have always farmed sustainably. Dry farming is another method we use to encourage grapes to express their full potential.
Legacy, Mia & Redside
ESTATE VINEYARDS
Combined, all three sites total 60 acres under vine and comprise more than 80 individual vineyard blocks. The original 30-acre parcel that is now our Legacy Vineyard was purchased in 1987 and first planted to pinot noir in 1988.
The 15-acre Mia Block was purchased in 2003 by Wendy Mia Lange and first planted to pinot noir in 2004. Cresting at 700′, vines grown at the the highest elevation of this vineyard are farmed specifically for the production of our rosé of pinot noir and sparkling wines.
The Redside Vineyard was purchased in 2006 and first planted in 2007 providing an additional 10-acres of estate-grown pinot noir. The vineyard’s namesake is the bespeckled and beloved “Redside” trout that are native to Oregon’s Deschutes River Basin. Redside is also a nod to the distinctive red soils found throughout all of our properties.
Lucky River Vineyard
EXPANDING THE ESTATE
The latest addition to the Lange portfolio. Nestled near the serene Luckiamute River 30 miles south of the winery, this new acquisition brings a fresh perspective and exciting opportunities to our portfolio and production. The vineyard boasts stunning views of rolling hills and lush forest, near Monmouth.
“We are intimately acquainted with the immense synergy between wines from this region and our Dundee Hills. This property checked all the boxes: an established vineyard with a stellar track record, having provided fruit for a number of our good friends and colleagues for many years. The elevation and aspect are ideal for the production of Pinot Noir and the site’s predominately Willakenzie soil is a perfect complement to our 60 acres of Jory soil in the Dundee Hills.” – Jesse Lange
With the addition of this site, we have gained an additional 65 acres, which expands our portfolio to meet the demand of the folks who have fallen in love with Lange over the last 37 years.
Vineyard Partners
ENDURING PARTNERSHIPS
In the half century or so since Oregon emerged as a world-class winegrowing region, certain vineyards have helped to amplify the standing of the Willamette Valley. The vineyards we have the good fortune to partner with include Freedom Hill, Mistletoe, Durant, and others. All have contributed to securing our place amongst the world’s most coveted winegrowing regions.
Long-standing partnerships with these iconic sites have helped Lange establish a well-deserved reputation for excellence.
Along with routine site visits to sample fruit, we barrel sample with vineyard owners and managers throughout the year. This feedback loop allows for deeper levels of connection, communication, and investment in our ongoing collaborative efforts.
