Fashioning a New Tasting Room

It was thirty years ago when Don and Wendy Lange moved into the hills above Dundee and became one of the early-established wineries in the state of Oregon. Today, they and second-generation winemaker Jesse Lange are commemorating this anniversary by breaking ground on a new tasting room to better accommodate continued growth in Willamette Valley wine country traffic.

The addition will not only increase space for hosting casual and private seated tastings, but it includes plans for a larger laboratory footprint, room for production to expand, and an opportunity for more food and wine experiences with a state-of-the-art chef’s kitchen.

The Lange’s are working with Portland based Holah Design + Architecture, a firm the family selected for its commitment to bringing-to-life ideas that are rooted in the Pacific Northwest. Plus, the two companies have a history. In the mid-2000’s, the Lange’s partnered with the team at Holah Design to construct their West Wing building – a second barrel room and formal tasting room, as well as administrative offices.

Working in concert with the Lange’s and Holah Design is O’Brien & Company, a design/build construction firm that specializes in wineries and utilizes green construction. They pride themselves on understanding the dream of their clients to “live and work in your passion.” This characteristic is of particular importance as Don & Wendy have lived onsite since they first opened the tasting room in their basement in 1987.

With the hopes of a fall 2017 launch, the hospitality wing will add on significant square footage in the form of an elegant tasting hall, accompanied by a large deck overlooking older blocks of the estate vineyard with Mount Hood peeking out in the distance.

Visitors to Oregon’s wine country may see the construction in person this summer as Lange Estate Winery’s Tasting Room remains open daily from 11am to 5pm for both classic tastings, as well as tours and private seated tastings.

Wine & Spirits lists Lange as “Year’s Best U.S. Pinot Noir”

Lange Estate Winery & Vineyards is ecstatic to hear about one of our favorite blends receiving Wine & Spirit’s Award for “Year’s Best U.S. Pinot Noir.”
What makes the Year’s Best U.S. Pinot Noir? We like to think that what ends in your glass begins in the vineyard. For our Three Hills Cuvée Pinot Noir, Lange Estate sources from our own hillside vineyards along with exquisite fruit from renowned vineyards Freedom Hill and Yamhill Vineyards. Each site is a distinctive expression of its relative Terroir with differing soil types, elevations, and clonal selections. In combination, these vineyards lend specific and unique characteristics to a masterfully integrated blend crafted by winemakers Don and Jesse Lange.
The 2014 Three Hills Cuvée Pinot noir has a deep garnet hue, with an enticing nose of pink peppercorns, allspice, dried rose petals, juicy Oregon strawberries with hints of lavender and nutmeg. The palate shows black raspberries and cherry cola flavors, accented by notes of clove, vanilla, well-integrated barrel spice, and is superbly balanced by fresh acidity and silky tannins. This wine is a classic “drink-now-or-hold-for-a-decade” Pinot noir.

We are thrilled to be included as one of the region’s trailblazers and five “MUST-VISIT” Willamette Valley Wineries! After 30 years of winegrowing in the Willamette Valley, we can still attest to the rare nature of Oregon’s wine country that was so accurately captured in this piece.

Lange Estate, a sparkling story

The 2015 vintage marks our first foray into sparkling wine production.

A quick tour from the vineyard to bottling…..

We began farming our upper Estate Mia bloc during the 2014 growing season with an eye toward grooming those vines expressly for our first Methode Champinoise Brut Rose.

With the advent of an early harvest in 2015, we were ready to get cracking on the bountiful vintage and our new sparking wine project.

Long sunny days, and overnight temperatures registering higher than normal assured us of full, complex flavors and beautifully ripened fruit.  The Pinot noir that we had lovingly tended for sparkling was harvested under clear skies and perfect conditions.

The resultant wine has now traveled from vine to cellar to tirage to bottling.

We are now watching over these few precious bottles while they
quietly convert the remaining sugars into the tiny little bubbles that characterize a fine sparkling wine.

This will take some time…
